Green Party leader and Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth, Roderic O'Gorman has said that he is preparing for an election to be called this week.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One programme, Mr O’Gorman said that he is eager to get into the campaign to discuss the various plans of each party.

"The posters are threaded and ready to go and we’ve been out canvassing busily in my own constituency and Green Party candidates have been out canvassing across the country," he said.

"I think there’s been a bit of a phony war in terms of various policy proposals that have been floated in the media over the last couple of weeks, I’m eager to get into the campaign itself and let’s get talking about the plans that each party has for the country over the next five years."

He said that while his preference is for a 29 November general election date, the Government still has "work to do".

He said that he hopes that a number of issues will be discussed at Cabinet tomorrow.

"I don’t think that Government should down tools, we have to work right to the end," he said.

He said that he hoped to get the national planning framework and housing targets "over the line" before the Dáil dissolves this Thursday.

"I know Minister Ryan is looking to bring a memo about searching, sampling and sanctioning planes that may be bringing illegal ammunition either over the country or through our airports - our laws aren’t strong enough there at the moment and I think it’s important we take action against that."

Mr O’Gorman added that he also hopes to see a reform of the Road Safety Authority.
