Tributes have been paid to Bishop Emeritus of Limerick Donal Murray, who has died aged 84.

Bishop Murray, a former auxiliary bishop in Dublin, resigned in 2009 as Bishop of Limerick following publication of the Murphy Report into clerical child abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese.

The report criticised Bishop Murray for his failure to deal with allegations about Fr Thomas Naughton and said the failure was inexcusable.

In a statement, Archbishop Dermot Farrell said he was greatly saddened by his death.

Archbishop Farrell said his decision to resign as Bishop of Limerick "necessitated both courage and strength."

"Like Christ, he was more concerned about the little ones, the most vulnerable, than about himself, his reputation, or his position."

Archbishop Eamon Martin described Bishop Murray as an insightful communicator and said his writings, homilies and addresses were guaranteed to inspire conversation and discussion on the reality of belief and practice.

Archbishop Kieran O'Reilly said his final months on this earth were filled with illness and suffering.
