Just over 2,500 third level applicants have received college offers this lunchtime in the CAO's second round.

They include 1,009 who have received an offer for the first time.

1,050 are Level 8 applicants who have received an offer of their first preference course.

Those who have received an offer in this round have until 3pm on Wednesday to accept.

The CAO’s Head of communications, Eileen Keleghan, has advised applicants to carefully consider their options.

"Many of the applicants receiving a second round offer today may have already accepted an offer in Round One, and it is important that they take the time to decide between these courses and inform CAO before the reply date of this Wednesday, 11 September, at 3pm if they wish to accept the new offer", she said.

Accepting the new offer will automatically cancel a previous acceptance.

If a student does not want to accept an offer made in this round they are advised to simply do nothing, and any previous acceptance of a course that they made will stand.

Applicants can check if they have received a Round Two offer by logging in to their CAO account using the 'My Application' facility from 2pm.

Successful applicants will also receive an offer notification by email and SMS text message if they have selected this option.

Random selection

Half of the third level undergraduate courses that used random selection to offer places to students in the CAO's round 1 last month have today, as part of round 2, offered places to those students who missed out.

This means that in the case of 12 courses any student who got the points required but lost out due to random selection has now been offered a place.

Among these courses are Undergraduate entry Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons and at University of Galway, Occupational Therapy in UCC, and Economics and Finance at UCD.

A total of 24 undergraduate courses used random selection in round 1.

Today’s Round 2 data also shows that three other courses that used random selection in round 1 have offered places to some but not all of the students who achieved the points score required.

These courses are Pharmacy at UCC, Dental Science at Trinity, and Actuarial and Financial Studies at UCD.
