It was the coldest August in six years, and the wettest Co Mayo has seen in over three decades, new figures from Met Éireann reveal.
The bulk of the rainfall last month fell in the west and northwest of the country, which also saw the lowest temperatures. The south and east had a relatively dry, warm month.
The average temperature was 15.47C, marginally higher (0.20C) that the the most recent 1991-2020 long-term average (LTA).
August 1995 was the warmest on record (17.75C) and August 1912 the coldest (11.63C).
Rainfall last month was 113% of the 1991-2020 LTA, but varied massively between regions.

Dublin Airport got half the average, while Belmullet, Co Mayo had double the average amount of rain, making August its wettest since 1992.
It also saw the month's highest 10-minute mean wind speed of 37 knots (69km/h).
Elsewhere in Mayo, Newport had its wettest August in almost four decades.
There were huge differences in the amount of sunshine in different parts of the country too.
Casement Aerodrome in Co Dublin saw almost 190 hours, while Malin Head in Co Donegal got under two thirds that amount, at just over 120 hours.
Six stations had their highest mean wind for August on record (record lengths ranging between 13 and 20 years). Six other stations had their highest mean wind for August since at least 1989.
