A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court charged in connection with the stabbing of an Army chaplain two days ago.

The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons as he is a juvenile, appeared before Judge Gerard Furlong at a juvenile sitting of Galway District Court this afternoon.

The teenager is charged with assault causing harm relating to a stabbing in Renmore on Thursday night.

The court heard that he was detained by gardaí shortly after the knife attack and that there could be further charges as the garda investigation continues.

Garda Conor Breen gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court the accused made no reply to the charge.

Gardaí objected to the application for bail because of what they described as the seriousness of the offence.

Detective Sergeant Paul McNulty told the court it is believed the accused holds a radical Islamist mindset. He said early analysis of devices attributed to the accused has revealed support to the Islamic state militant group.

Judge Furlong refused bail. The teenager was remanded in custody to Oberstown Children Detention Campus.

He will appear in court again via video link next Tuesday, 20 August.
