Rossmore Park in Co Monaghan remains the most-visited forest park in Ireland for the second year running.

The rankings for Coillte's top ten most popular parks for 2023 were announced today.

Rossmore Park attracted more than 357,000 visitors last year.

The top three also included Ticknock Recreation Area in Dublin and Donadea Forest Park in Co Kildare, which both exceeded 200,000 visitors.

Jenkinstown Wood in Co Kilkenny, Killykeen Forest Park in Co Cavan, Belleek in Co Mayo, Hazelwood in Co Sligo, Tintern Abbey in Co Wexford, Portumna Forest Park in Co Galway and Ards Forest Park in Co Donegal all made the most-visited sites on the list.

The rankings come as a €3m fund to develop and upgrade amenities at Coillte Forest Parks around Ireland was also announced.

The money will be used to maintain and manage existing trails, as well as developing new trails, carpark improvements, footbridges and toilet facilities.

The funding for upgrades was announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys, who said she wants to see a recent surge in visitor numbers to forest parks continue.

She said: "If you want to take a break and get some peace and quiet - there is nothing quite like a walk in the forest.

"There are so many hidden gems on our doorstep in Ireland and I would encourage people to get out and explore them."

Coillte has more than 440,000 hectares of forest and land, and 260 forest recreational areas.

Coillte's CEO Imelda Hurley said it was the largest provider of outdoor recreation, with an estimated 18 million visits.

Ms Hurley said the funding would enable Coillte to further enhance the visitor experience in recreational forests across the country.

Among some of the parks that will benefit from this latest funding is Deerpark, Co Cavan, which is set to receive €200,000 for the design and construction of a new car park entrance.

A total of €150,000 will also be given to Belleek in Co Mayo for a pond rejuvenation project, while infrastructure improvement works at Slieve Foye in Co Louth will receive €60,000.

Today's funding announcement is part of a strategic partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte to provide €3m funding every year between 2022 and 2026 to enhance recreational facilities on Coillte land.
