Gráinne Seoige is expected to seek Fianna Fáil's nomination to run for the party in Galway West in the next general election.

Outgoing TD for the constituency, Éamon Ó Cuív, who is not running for re-election, said that he had received a call from Ms Seoige and that she intends to attempt to be a candidate.

Mr Ó Cuív said that he expected at least four people to seek a nomination in Galway West, which is a five-seater.

He said he was "neutral between the lot of them" and was neither "for or against anybody".

Asked if he thought Ms Seoige had a good chance in getting his party’s support, Mr Ó Cuív said that all potential candidates had a good chance, but said it was up to the ordinary members who would select the party’s candidate.

Nominations for the constituency open tomorrow and will be open for a week.

A candidate needs five ordinary members to nominate them, or one party cumann, to be considered.

It is expected the selection convention for Galway West will be held early next month.

A party spokesperson declined to comment on Ms Seoige’s intentions.

Fianna Fáil expects to have all of its selection conventions finished by the end of September.

That is despite repeated claims by the party, and its coalition partners, that the Government will run its full term, until March 2025.

During her career in broadcasting, Ms Seoige worked in TG4, TV3, RTÉ and Sky News.

Mr Ó Cuív, a grandson of Éamon de Valera, is a former deputy leader of Fianna Fáil, and held senior ministerial posts in administrations led by Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen.

He said that six months was not a long lead-in to a general election, despite the speculation.

Potential candidates used to take years to meet members, never mind months, he added.

Deputy Ó Cuív also joked that Taoiseach Simon Harris would not pass up an opportunity to meet his namesake Kamala Harris in the White House next St Patrick's Day, should she win the US Presidential Election.
