The Department of Justice has said no conversation has taken place between Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Minister Helen McEntee in relation to any further extension of his term.

A departmental spokesperson said this morning that Ms McEntee "fully supports" the Garda Commissioner.

"However, no conversation has taken place with the Minister or with Government," they added.

A spokesperson added that there was "no offer" from "any Department of Justice official" either, in relation to the extension of the Garda Commissioner's term.

The statement follows a report in the Irish Times which contended that the Commissioner had been "approached by the Government" about another extension to his contract but he had declined it.

Mr Harris was appointed Garda Commissioner on a five-year term in 2018, and accepted a two-year extension last year.
