Gardaí are continuing to question a man in his 30s over the death of a woman in Midleton, Co Cork yesterday.

She has been named locally as Daena Walsh.

Gardaí have said they are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the woman's death after she was found with serious injuries at an apartment off Main Street in the town at around 4.15pm.

The woman, who is believed to be a 27-year-old mother-of-two who had lived in the apartment, received emergency medical attention at the scene.

She was pronounced dead a short time later.

The arrested man is currently being held at a garda station in the southern region.

The scene has been preserved for examination by gardaí, and the local coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified.

Firefighters were also called to the scene at the same time as a section of the property was on fire.

They rushed to the site in order to contain the blaze, which was brought under control shortly after 5pm.

Firefighters remained on site for a period afterwards in order to monitor the situation.

Gardaí and firefighters remain in the area and traffic diversions are in place.

An incident room has been established at Midleton Garda Station, and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.

A family liaison officer has also been assigned to support the family.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them, as well as for anyone with camera footage and who may have passed through the Connolly Street or Main Street areas of Midleton yesterday to come forward.
