Dublin's north inner city erupted with joy as local hero Kellie Harrington secured at least a bronze and became the first Irish woman to medal at more than one Olympic Games.

Hundreds gathered at Diamond Park around the corner from Kellie's home street of Portland Row to watch the bout on a big screen.

Cries of 'Ole ole' and 'Kellie Kellie' rang out around the park as they watched the local girl in the ring in Paris.

When it was confirmed she had won, the crowd jumped from their seats in celebration, dancing and cheering that the daughter of Dublin's north inner city has secured a place in Irish Olympic history.

"I told you she was gonna lash her out of it," joked one of her neighbours.

Another woman who had grabbed a front row seat for the screening said: "She done brilliant as per usual and I'd say she'll go all the way. When I saw the opponent coming out I thought it looked a bit dodgy, but she didn't let us down."

Joe Dowling, who was wearing a green beret, said Kellie Harrington idolises her community and that the feeling is mutual.

"She's a double Olympian. Look at the crowd today. That's one of our own. That's our Kellie," he said.

Annie Lanzillotto from The Bronx in New York, and who is a friend of Kellie's, relished the experience of watching Kellie on her home turf.

"When I grew up I didn't see little boys rooting for female athletes but everyone here is just shouting Kellie and I saw the little girls shaking their shoulders because that’s what she was doing going into the ring."

Nine-year-old Masie Farrell, a boxer herself, said she was inspired by the local Olympian.

Two young fans soak up the atmosphere

"She’s one of the best boxers I ever seen and I look up to her very cause I love doing boxing as well."

Eleven-year-old Ava McDermott echoed those sentiments: "She means a lot. Just like, showing how people from Dublin can do it you know.

"She’s just such an inspiration for the girls and boys that wanna make it to the Olympics."
