Dublin West TD Jack Chambers has been appointed as deputy leader of Fianna Fáil.
Tánaiste and party leader Micheál Martin said the Minister of State would play a crucial role as Fianna Fáil prepares for the general election.
He said that Mr Chambers' commitment and organisational skills in his recent role as director of elections were impressive.
The position had been vacant since 2020 when Dara Calleary resigned as the party's deputy leader over his attendance at a golf society dinner during the pandemic.
Separately, Mr Martin also said that he would announce the Government's nomination for the EU Commissioner post next week.
The Fianna Fáil leader added he would consult with people on this issue in the coming days.
Harris urges pushback against election speculation
Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has urged his party to push back hard against speculation that there will be an early general election.
Simon Harris told a meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party that Budget 2025 will be delivered in the autumn.
"This Budget will be about turning the economic success this country and the people have created, into real and meaningful changes in their daily lives," Mr Harris said.
"That will mean reducing the cost of childcare, school and college.
"It will mean giving families the cushion they need to help with the cost of raising their kids," he said.
