An air and sea rescue operation is taking place in Co Galway after a man was reported to be missing off Cruach na Cara in the Carna area of Conamara.

It is understood he was sailing on a yacht earlier with a female companion and they went ashore in a small dinghy.

The man has not been seen since he went to retrieve the dinghy later in the day.

It is understood a mayday call was issued from a vessel near Oileán Máisean, a short distance offshore from Carna, shortly before 6pm.

RNLI crews from the Aran Islands and Clifden have been tasked to the scene, along with the lifeboat based at Ros a Mhíl.

The operation is being led by the Irish Coast Guard in conjunction with gardaí.

A garda spokesperson said: "Shortly after 6.15pm this evening, gardaí and the Irish Coast Guard responded to reports of a person, understood to be a man, entering the water from a boat off the coast of Carna, Co. Galway.

"An Irish Coast Guard led operation is currently under way."
