An investigation is under way after a man's body was discovered at an apartment in Clones, Co Monaghan.

The body of Mykola Dernovyi, who was in his 40s, was discovered at an apartment at the Diamond in the centre of the border town at around 10pm on Saturday.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination.

Mr Dernovyi's body was removed to Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, Co Meath, where a post-mortem examination was carried out.

Gardaí said this evening that the results of the post mortem examination were not being released for operational reasons.

They have appealed for anyone with information to contact gardaí at Clones Garda station 047 51025, the Garda Confidential Phone number 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

People in Clones have expressed shock about Mr Dernovyi's death.

Dewald Johannes Swanepoel who is from Cape Town in South Africa has been living in the town for six months.

He told RTÉ News: "I always felt safe and welcome..and people are friendly and helpful here, so for me it was actually a huge shock."

Margaret McGovern has been living in Clones for more than fifty years: "It just put a damper over the town really, you know people don't want it to happen, and poor family so far away. It's them you think of."

It is understood Mr Dernovyi was part of a group of Ukrainians who had rented part of the accommodation in the building where he died.
