Ceremony takes place at GPO to mark 1916 Easter Rising

President Michael D Higgins led a ceremony to mark the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising at the GPO in Dublin today.

He was joined by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste Micheál Martin and Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill.

This was the President's first engagement in public since a recent short stay in hospital and the last of these commemorations for Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. It was also the first time a Northern Ireland First Minister attended.

Fine Gael leader and Minister for Further Education Simon Harris, Minister for Enterprise Simon Coveney, and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald were among those in attendance.

Mr Harris was seen speaking to former Irish president Mary McAleese and Ms O'Neill.

Also in attendance were Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien, Minister of State Pippa Hackett, and Minister of State Martin Heydon.

Easter 1916 was the foundational event for Óglaigh na hÉireann (the Defence Forces) and representatives from the Army, the Air Corps and the Naval Service took part in the ceremony.

The President laid a wreath to commemorate those who died after which a minute's silence was observed.

The national flag was lowered and the proclamation was read aloud by Army Captain Paul Murphy.

A brass band and a pipe band also took part. The ceremony concluded with an Air Corps flypast and prayers of remembrance.
