Teenage pedestrian dies after being struck by car in Co Mayo

It comes as a 17-year-old boy died after being hit by a car on the N17 in Co Mayo last night.

The incident happened just days after a mother and her two children were killed on the same stretch of road, close to Claremorris.

The incident happened at around 9.20pm and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The road was closed for a time overnight and early this morning, while Garda forensic inspectors carried out an examination of the scene. It reopened to traffic by mid-morning.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to last night's Co Mayo incident to come forward and anyone with any information is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station on 094 937 2080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

The deaths of four people on the same stretch of road in Mayo in recent days has drawn further attention to the frequency of collisions on the main route between the west and north-west.

It has also prompted a renewed appeal to motorists and other road users to exercise caution at all times.

Meanwhile, a woman in her 30s died following a two-car collision on the N24 in Co Tipperary on Friday night.

Gardaí say a roads policing initiative across the Easter weekend has so far resulted in over 100 incidents being detected around the country where drivers were suspected of being under the influence of drink or drugs.

The enforcement operation will continue throughout the rest of the bank holiday weekend.
