A man has pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possessing child abuse material in the form of two videos and two images.

Niall Colgan, 39 and of Muckross Park, Perrystown, Dublin 12, appeared in court where he pleaded guilty to one count.

He pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography in the form of two indecent videos and two indecent images of children at his home address on 1 February 2022.

Ronan Kennedy SC, defending, asked for a period of time to allow for the preparation of a report.

Judge Martin Nolan set a sentence date of 7 May when full facts will be heard.

Colgan was employed as a senior official at the Department of Justice.

The Department has said "it is not the practice to comment on any individual but, in general, where a civil servant is under criminal investigation, it is normal practice for the person to be placed off duty pending the conclusion of any criminal proceedings".
