Prayers have been said at masses throughout the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore today for six-year-old Matthew Healy from Ballygunner, who died following an incident at Rathmoylan near Dunmore East in the early hours of Friday morning.
Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan, who led a prayer vigil at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Waterford last night, called for prayers of peace and consolation for Matthew's family and loved ones.
Around 200 people attended the prayer service.
Prayers have also been offered at masses in the diocese last night and today.
A woman in her 30s was arrested by gardaí close to the scene at Rathmoylan shortly after the alarm was raised.
Gardaí have not released the results of a post-mortem examination on Matthew Healy's body.
Their investigation is continuing.
A psychologist from the National Educational Psychological Service is assisting Principal Kieran O'Sullivan and staff at Matthew's primary school in Faithlegg to support the 200 boys and girls who are pupils at the school.
Matthew was a senior infants pupil there.
A statement on behalf of principal Kieran O'Sullivan and staff said Matthew was a beloved member of the school community and described his death as a terrible tragedy.
Matthew was also a member of Park Rangers soccer club, based nearby.
All games and activities at the club were postponed this weekend.
Minister for Education Norma Foley has extended her sympathies to Matthew Healy's family.
In a statement, she described Matthew as a treasured member of the school community.
"I'd like to extend my very sincere sympathy to the family of Matthew Healy and the wider community of Waterford, and of course the school community," she said.
"I know Matthew was a much loved and treasured member of the school community and will be greatly greatly missed by his fellow pupils, by the staff, board of management and everyone within the school community.
"I'd like to confirm too that our NEPS (National Educational Psychological Service) psychologists are engaging with the school and will be available to provide whatever support is required at this very sad and difficult time."
