Man appears in court charged with murder of man in Kildare

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 50-year-old man in Co Kildare this week.

Ryan Kearney is accused of fatally stabbing Jeffrey Jackson in an apartment at The Lamp on School Street in Kilcock at around 4pm on Thursday afternoon.

The 38-year-old, with an address at Loughnamona Drive in Leixlip, appeared at a special sitting of Naas District Court this afternoon.

Detective Sergeant Ger Moore from Leixlip Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court "it's alleged Mr Jackson died violently" in the apartment and he said it was alleged the victim was stabbed several times with a knife.

Defence solicitor Daniel Nolan said Mr Kearney is unemployed and in receipt of disability allowance.

He requested that his client receives a psychological assessment and he applied for free legal aid.

Mr Kearney, who was dressed in a black jacket, black trousers and a grey hoodie, made no comment during the brief appearance.

Judge Desmond Zaidan remanded the accused in custody to Cloverhill Prison in Dublin, to appear before Naas District Court again next Wednesday 14 February via video link for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
