The family of an Irish filmmaker who was reported missing in New York has confirmed his death.
Ross McDonnell, 44, was reported missing on 4 November after his bike was discovered at Fort Tilden Beach in Queens.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) said a body found on Breezy Point Beach on Friday is believed to be that of Mr McDonnell.
In a statement to RTÉ News, the NYPD added: "Photos provided to police of Ross McDonnell show a birthmark that matches one that was on the body that was discovered on the beach.
"The body has not been positively identified as of yet. The investigation is still ongoing."
Mr McDonnell's family announced his death in a notice on RIP.ie.
He is survived by his parents Maureen and Nicky, his sister Louise and niece Eva.
The notice said: "He will be very sadly missed by his loving parents, sister, niece, aunt, uncles, cousins, extended family and his many dear friends, LJ, and also his colleagues in Ireland, U.S.A. and around the world."
Originally from Howth, north Dublin, Mr McDonnell had been living in the Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn, New York.
He won an Emmy Award in 2021 for his cinematography on the Showtime series 'The Trade'.
According to his website, his first feature picture, 'Colony', debuted at the Toronto International Picture Festival and was nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award and won the IDFA First Feature Award.
In 2018, he received a nomination for an Emmy for his directing of the documentary 'Elian', a feature-length work produced by Jigsaw Productions, CNN Films, and the BBC.
