Ukraine has said it downed around two-thirds of the 31 attack drones launched overnight, mostly on frontline areas by Russia.

"Nineteen enemy Shahed-136/131 attack unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were destroyed. The Russian occupants sent most of the attack UAVs to the frontline areas," the air force said, adding Russia also used several missiles.

Two strong explosions were heard in central Kyiv this morning by AFP journalists, who also saw trails in the sky, shortly before air raid sirens sounded.

"Strong explosions were heard on the left bank of the capital. According to preliminary information, the air defences worked against ballistic weapons," Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

There were no reports of injured people so far, he said.

The attack came after a long period of calm in the Ukrainian capital.

Air defences downed a missile in Kyiv on 21 September. The falling debris wounded seven people, including a child.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Ukraine had deployed more Western air defence systems, as it braces for a second full winter of Russian attacks on energy facilities.

Systematic strikes by Moscow's forces last year targeted Ukraine's energy grid, leaving thousands without heating or electricity in freezing temperatures for long periods.

Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said a Russian ballistic missile was launched toward the capitalat about 8am.(6am Irish time).

"After a long pause of 52 days, the enemy has resumedmissile attacks on Kyiv," Mr Popko said on the Telegram messagingapp. "The missile failed to reach Kyiv, air defenders shot itdown as it was approaching the capital."

Mr Popko said there were no casualties or major damage in the capital.

Ruslan Kravchenko, regional governor for the central Kyivregion, said five private houses and several commercial buildings in the area were damaged. He said two Russian missiles struck a field between settlements.

Russia has intensified its bombardments of Ukraine's ports, including Odesa, and grain infrastructure since July when Moscow pulled out of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, a wartime deal that enabled Ukraine's exports to reach many countries facingthe threat of hunger.
