Iarnród Éireann has announced it is to recruit up to 100 train drivers over the next two years.

The positions will be based at different locations around the country including Cork, Dublin, Mayo, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Westmeath.

Iarnród Éireann is appealing to women to consider driving roles and said it had an increasing number of women in its trainee classes.

It comes as the train network is to expand in the next few years under the National Development Plan 2021 to 2030.

As part of the plan, the DART+ programme aims to more than double the commuter capacity and treble the electrification of the greater Dublin area rail network.

In a statement, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann Jim Meade said: "Iarnród Éireann is a dynamic organisation, which offers excellent progression opportunities.

"With the planned expansion of services as part of the National Development Plan, it is an exciting time to become part of a growing organisation.

"We are also seeing great interest in careers in Iarnród Éireann from a range of backgrounds – we are a diverse and inclusive employer, and in particular we urge more women to apply for driver roles, and are encouraged by the increasing interest from women in recent recruitment drives."

Applications can be made on the Iarnród Éireann website.
