The number of people arriving in Ireland from Ukraine last month was 27% lower, compared to the same period last year.

New figures from the Department of Justice show that 3,392 Ukrainians moved to Ireland in July of this year, compared to 4,662 during the same month in 2022.

In total, 91,011 Ukrainians have moved to Ireland since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

While the numbers arriving in Ireland fluctuate each month, there has been a downward trend overall.

Over the summer period, however, arrivals have started to increase from 2,713 in May to 3,392 in July.

A similiar uptick in arrivals was experienced during the summer months of 2022, before declining again.

Separately, there has also been a drop in the number of international protection applicants coming to Ireland.

The Department of Justice has said that arrival numbers for July of this year, which stand at 1,029, are 19% lower compared to the 1,266 figure from the same month last year.

In total, 19,758 people have applied for international protection since February 2022.

The number of undocumented arrivals to Ireland has also been on a downward trajectory over the past few months.

In December 2022, there were 455 undocumented arrivals at Dublin Airport, compared to 289 last month.

While these numbers can also fluctuate each month, the numbers overall represent a decline.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said that immigration officials are "actively engaging" with airport authorities and airlines to "underscore the importance and to provide support in helping to reduce the number of passengers boarding flights without the correct documentation".

In relation to Ukrainians in Ireland, the figures show that 39 people voluntarily exited the Temporary Protection Directive between May and June 2023.

This EU directive was activated in response to the crisis in Ukraine, in order to respond to the mass displacement of people by providing them with immediate temporary protection.

It is understood that there are a number of reasons as to why somebody would opt out of the directive, such as a change of visa.

Opting out of the system does not necessarily mean that a person has returned to Ukraine.

The Department of Justice said that it was not possible to say how many people have returned to Ukraine overall, as there are no routine exit checks.
