Around 200 people seeking international protection are living in tented accommodation, Minister for Integration Roderic O'Gorman has said.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, he said September and October will be "tight in terms of the accommodation system".

"We're continuing to open new accommodation around the country for international protection applicants and for Ukrainians as well," Minister O'Gorman said.

"The numbers arriving in the country are lower than this time last year, but they continue to be significant.

"Some of the refurbished units that the Department of Housing had been working with us in terms of bringing forward for Ukrainians, many of those refurbished units will become available now September or October, and that will provide a place for people moving out of student accommodation."

Modular housing units in Sligo and Cork are full, but the minister said "units in Thurles, Tipperary, Claremorris, Mayo and Cavan town" will open "over the next number of weeks".

The Government is still looking at the possibility of floating accommodation due to pressures on the system, Minister O'Gorman said.

"It's not an easy solution but because of the pressure on accommodation right now we have to look at all potential avenues of accommodation and floating accommodation continues to be one that we're looking at," Minister O'Gorman said.

"We're also going to be opening some new short term tented accommodation on the site of the Central Mental Hospital, that's about to become a major development for the Land Development Agency.

"But for the next number of months, we're working with the Land Development Agency to have about 175 spaces for tented accommodation there.

"You'd be looking at maybe, 350 to 375.. out of about a total of 22,500 international protection applicants and indeed 90,000 in total we are offering accommodation.

"It is simply a recognition of the very significant pressure that we have on accommodation in our country right now."
