Met Éireann has forecast a spell of unseasonably wet and windy weather this weekend, with a status yellow rain warning issued for all counties today.

A status yellow rainfall warning for Connacht, Leinster, Munster, Cavan and Monaghan is in place until 7pm.

In Donegal, the warning runs from noon until midnight.

And in Northern Ireland, the UK Met Office has issued a rain warning for the six counties from midday to 9pm.

Spells of heavy rain are predicted, getting blustery at times, with the possibility of localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.

Met Éireann forecaster Liz Coleman said rain will track northwards over the country today.

"That rain will be heavy at times with possible impacts including localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions," Ms Coleman said.

"Somewhat drier conditions will develop in the south later as the rain clears but heavy rain will continue over much of the northern half of the country."

Tomorrow, Ireland can expect a further band of rain or showers as low pressure tracks eastwards, introducing fresh to strong and gusty north to northwest winds.

It will be particularly windy along exposed coasts in the west and northwest with a further weather warning likely to be issued.

The winds will moderate westerly on Sunday with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers.

Early indications are for the weather to remain unsettled into next week, Met Éireann said.
