Minute's silence for Irish woman killed in Spain

A minute's silence has been held in the Spanish coastal town of Salou as a mark of respect after the death of a 36-year-old Irish woman.

An Irish man has been arrested in connection with the killing and is expected to appear before a judge there.

A local journalist said that no information about the names will be released in the preliminary proceedings, which is not uncommon in Spain.

The body of the woman was found in a corridor at a hotel in Salou, south of Barcelona last night.

Spanish Police said they were questioning a 30-year-old man who was arrested at the scene at a local police station.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and An Garda Síochána said they were aware of the incident.

Spanish police said they were called to the Hotel Magnolia in Salou on the Costa Dorada, at around 9.30pm last night.

Police were called to the hotel last night

When they arrived, they discovered the woman with fatal injuries in one of the hotel's corridors.

Police said she appeared to have been strangled with a cord.

A man who was beside her at the time had injuries to his hand and wrist which police said they believe occurred by smashing glass.

He was arrested and taken to hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

It is understood he is also Irish and is the victim's partner.

He is being detained and questioned at a police station and is due in court later.

Staff at the four-star adult-only hotel declined to comment.

A spokesman for the Regional Government Department of Equality said they were working with the town hall and "making their services available to the family and close friends of the victim who need maximum privacy at these difficult moments".

In a statement, gardaí said the alleged incident involving Irish citizens is being led by the Spanish authorities and they had no further comment.

Meanwhile, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin said the death of an Irish woman in Spain was "very shocking news".
