A renewed appeal has been issued for information about a hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of Fintan Traynor 12 years ago in Co Monaghan.

The 20-year-old was walking home after a night out in Castleblaney in the early hours of Sunday 26 June 2011 when he was struck by a car on the Lemgare Road.

This road links the villages of Clontibret and Annyalla with Derrynoose and Keady in Co Armagh.

The driver of the car left the scene.

Gardaí believe that an Audi A4 1996-2001 model was involved in the hit and run.

The front lower portion of the grille of such a vehicle was recovered at the scene.

On the 12th anniversary of Mr Traynor's death, gardaí are renewing their appeal for information about this fatal hit and run.

More than 400 leads have been followed over the past decade, but so far the vehicle and driver have not been located.

Detective Inspector Adrian Durcan of Monaghan Garda District said that with the passage of time, someone may feel more comfortable coming forward with information about what happened.

"Do you know someone who may have had damage to an Audi car around this period? Did someone confide in you?"

"In 12 years, loyalties, friendships and relationships change and perhaps now you are in a position to provide the investigation team with the vital information that would locate the vehicle and driver", he said.

A reward for information which leads to the recovery of the vehicle and identification of the driver is available through Crimestoppers.

Anyone with information can contact Monaghan Garda Station or Crimestoppers on 1800 25 00 25.
