Irish Moulin Rouge star stepping from cabaret into law

It was the final kick for the Irish star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris last night.

Claudine Van Den Bergh Cooke, 31, has performed at the iconic red windmill theatre in Montmarte for 11 years and is the show's first ever Irish principal dancer.

"It has been brilliant. All my family are out front," Ms Van Den Bergh Cooke said.

"Friends, family, all the Moulin Rouge gang are here. It has been a wonderful experience."

The Sutton-native is leaving behind the costumes and can-can dance of the cabaret for a career in law.

Claudine Van Den Bergh Cooke is one of three principal dancers at the Moulin Rouge

"I recently completed my degree in law for which I got a First-Class Honours," Ms Van Den Bergh Cooke explained.

"I studied online. It was a lot. I was studying all day and then working all night.

"But they were nice together because one is very physical and the other requires a lot of brain power although you also need brain power for any last minute adjustments on stage. It is always quite spontaneous and fun on stage."

"I think dancers have a drive in them that really drives them forward in their passions. I guess it has just been a similar situation for me in the law field as opposed to dance.

"I think they're very different worlds but similar in ways."

Ms Van Den Bergh Cooke feels nostalgic about leaving behind what she describes as her Moulin Rouge family which includes an actual family member.

Her sister Isabelle Van Den Bergh Cooke has performed alongside her at the Moulin Rouge for the past eight years.

"What an incredible experience it has been working alongside my sister here at the Moulin Rouge, for me, for the last eight years," Isabelle said.

"I am so incredibly proud of her. She has been an inspiration to so many of the girls. She is an absolutely extraordinary artist and we are all going to miss her so much."

Claudine Van Den Bergh Cooke has performed two shows a night, five nights a week at the Moulin Rouge but she will not be idle for long.

She will take her Solicitors Qualifying Exams next year and has enrolled online for a Masters in Corporate Law at BPP University in the UK.

"I am looking forward to exploring the restaurants of Paris because they were always closed by the time we finished our shows," Ms Van Den Bergh Cooke explained.

"But I will miss my Moulin Rouge family. I will miss the costumes. They make you feel like a million dollars. And I will miss performing to a live audience. I can't even it put it into words. It is something magical."
