Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far with temperatures reaching 28.8C in Co Carlow.
Met Éireann said it is the highest temperature recorded this early in June since 28.9C was recorded in 1950 in Co Westmeath.
The forecaster said it is also the first time in Ireland's climate record that three consecutive years have achieved temperatures of these values.
This evening, Met Éireann issued a status yellow thunderstorm warning for Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway and Mayo.
Localised slow-moving showers and thunderstorms - with frequent lightning, gusty winds and hail in the most intense storms - are predicted with the yellow warning in place until 9pm.
Tonight is set to be mild and muggy with temperatures of 11 to 15C.
Tomorrow morning is also set to be dry with hazy sunshine in the north and east but cloudier in the south and west with the chance of some patchy rain.
However, scattered heavy showers will develop through the midlands and north west through the afternoon and evening with thunderstorms and spot flooding possible.
Temperatures will be between 22 to 26C.
