Police in Northern Ireland investigating the disappearance of a woman in Co Antrim just over a week ago have launched a murder inquiry after discovering suspected human remains.

Chloe Mitchell, 21, was last seen in Ballymena town centre early on the morning of Saturday 3 June.

Dozens of volunteers had been involved in a search operation, but tonight came the news her family had dreaded.

The PSNI said suspected human remains have been found and that while no formal identification has been made, a murder inquiry has been launched.

Two men aged 26 and 34 arrested as part of the investigation remain in police custody.

"Earlier this week we launched a criminal investigation into Chloe's disappearance," said detective chief inspector Richard Millar.

"Tragically, we now have reason to believe that Chloe was murdered.

"Our thoughts this evening are very much with Chloe’s family and we have specialist officers providing them with support at this heart-breaking time."

A prayer vigil for the 21-year-old and her family was held in Ballymena tonight.

Community Rescue Service volunteers

Forensic officers attended a flat in the James Street area of Ballymena this evening.

The property had been cordoned off by police earlier in the week.

The discovery comes after extensive searches across Ballymena over recent days.

Mr Millar added: "I would like to thank the community in Ballymena and the search and rescue teams for their help in trying to find Chloe."
