The bill to establish an Agri-Food Regulator to be known as An Rialálaí Agraibhia that will examine commercial relationships between food producers, processors and retailers has been passed in the Dáil.
The Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill provides mechanisms for the regulator to examine and make recommendations on any aspect of the agri-food supply chain, including the collection and analysis of price and market data to improve transparency and address information gaps in the supply chain.
Once established, An Rialálaí Agraibhia will also be the body responsible for investigating unfair trading practices.
Earlier this week, it was announced that Niamh Lenehan was appointed CEO-designate of the new State regulatory.
The bill will now go to the Seanad for further debate.
