Police in Switzerland have said the body of a 26-year-old Irish tourist was recovered from a river yesterday after a two-day search.

In a statement, the police said the Irish man was reported missing on Saturday evening in Lauterbrunnen in the Swiss Alps and the Bernese cantonal police began an investigation.

Police said they carried out the search for the missing man along with mountain experts and a police search dog.

The body of the man was found yesterday evening in the Lütschine river, near Zweilütschinen (municipality of Gündlischwand).

Lake Police Response Forces recovered the man's body from of the water.

Police said support is being provided to the man's relatives and an investigation by the Regional Public Prosecutor's Office is under way in order to "clarify the events".

The Department of Foreign Affairs here said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
