A 21-year-old man has died in a drowning accident in Co Waterford.

Five people got into difficulty while swimming at Whiting Bay in Ardmore at around 1:30pm today.

Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter 117 was dispatched from Waterford along with the Ardmore and Youghal coastguard units and Youghal RNLI.

The 21-year-old man was airlifted to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two other people were rescued by the Coast Guard while two others made their own way out of the water.

A Garda statement said: "One of these individuals, a man aged in his early 20s, was taken by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

"No other injuries have been reported at this time. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
