There will be some Irish layoffs at cloud storage company Dropbox after it announced a 16% cut to its total workforce which will result in 500 job losses globally.

The company employs more than 3,000 people globally and while it does not provide an exact regional breakdown, Dropbox says it employs hundreds of people in Ireland across areas such as sales, marketing, legal, engineering and finance.

A spokesperson for Dropbox told RTÉ News that some Irish-based jobs will be impacted by the layoffs but an exact number was not provided.

In a memo to staff, Dropbox CEO and co-founder Drew Houston said that while the business is profitable, growth has been slowing.

"Part of this is due to the natural maturation of our existing businesses, but more recently, headwinds from the economic downturn have put pressure on our customers and, in turn, on our business," Mr Houston wrote.

The company said it had shifted some employees from one team to another to focus on Artificial Intelligence projects but would need more talent with a different mix of skill sets, particularly in AI and early-stage product development.

Mr Houston visited Dropbox's international headquarters in Dublin last November.

At the time, he described the current tech environment as tough and challenging but said his own business remained stable and resilient.

While in Dublin, Mr Houston visited Dropbox's 'Studio', a purpose-built, open-plan office space with breakout rooms and meeting areas.
