Irishman dies battling Russian forces in Ukraine, says family

An Irishman has been killed in eastern Ukraine.

The family of Finbar Cafferkey confirmed that the Mayo native died while battling Russian forces in eastern Ukraine in recent days.

Mr Cafferkey is understood to have travelled to the country to assist local forces.

He had previously fought with Kurdish militia in Syria, during their engagements against IS.

Mr Cafferkey was in his 40s and from Acaill (Achill Island).

Reports of his death were confirmed by his family this afternoon.

At this stage, there are no details relating to the circumstances in which he died.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
