An Irish artist has launched a hand-drawn series of portraits commemorating the signatories of the Good Friday Agreement.

Shane Gillen's series, 'The Architects of Agreement', features over 30 portraits of politicians, civil rights activists and community leaders who played a pivotal role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland.

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is one of the politicians featured in Shane Gillen's series 'The Architects of Agreement'

Mr Gillen said: "It has been a lovely project to work on. It really started after John Hume's family commissioned me to do a Hume portrait two years ago. Not longer after that I was commissioned to do a portrait of Seamus Mallon. Since then, I have been working intensely on the project over the past six months or so.

"I have always been fascinated by the story of the Good Friday Agreement and the impact it had on Ireland and Northern Ireland. I wanted to pay tribute to those who worked tirelessly to bring peace. I hope to help raise awareness of the continued importance of peace and reconciliation as we enter a new phase in our history, with talk of checks and borders once more in the public consciousness."

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair was one of the signatories of the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr Gillen came to prominence as an artist when his 'Pandemic Portraits' series of works went viral during lockdown.

A short film has been released to accompany his latest project.

It features a specially commissioned reworking of Paul Brady's 'The Island', arranged and performed by Sligo artist Honas.
