The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has called on the HSE to carry out a full review of weekend activity across hospitals and the community sector as more than 700 patients waited for a bed this morning.

The INMO said there were 709 patients on hospital trolleys earlier today with 533 waiting in an emergency department and 176 in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

The top five most overcrowded hospitals are University Hospital Limerick with 90 patients, Cork University Hospital with 72, St James' Hospital, Dublin, with 53, Tallaght University Hospital with 49 and University Hospital Galway with 48.

INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: "Today’s figures demonstrate we have had yet another busy weekend across all hospital sites.

"We have seen a pattern of extremely high levels of overcrowding following weekends, this cannot continue.

"The INMO is now requesting that the HSE immediately carry out a full review of weekend activity across all hospital sites and in the community sector.

"The pressure that nurses and midwives are under can no longer be sustained at this level."
