A senior garda officer has been appointed as a special advisor to Interpol's senior management team in Lyon, France.

Rory Corcoran worked in An Garda Síochána in counter-terrorism, financial crime and organised crime with the Special Detective Unit and the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau.

He is retiring five years early to take up the newly created position in France next Monday.

Mr Corcoran will work with a team of senior international police officers advising them on serious and organised crime, cybercrime, money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

The detective inspector secured the position through open competition after it was advertised globally.

Mr Corcoran previously worked on secondment as Director of the Interpol Financial Crime & Anti-Corruption Centre, the first Irish police officer to hold the senior position at the world’s only global police organisation.

He was involved in major international investigations into transnational cartels and mafia-style criminal organisation and led the specific Interpol Operation "Jackal" targeting the activities of the "Black Axe" Nigerian organised crime group.

"Black Axe" operated money mules and laundered millions in stolen money through Ireland.

During his 33 years in An Garda Síochána, Mr Corcoran worked on the most serious terrorism and organised crime cases including the Northern Bank Robbery, the Omagh Bombing and the arrest of the now deceased leader of the Real IRA Michael Mc Kevitt.

He also arrested Brian Meehan and gave evidence in the Special Criminal Court against the criminal gang member who’s now serving life in prison for the murder in 1996 of journalist Veronica Guerin.

Rory Corcoran’s father James, who is 92 years old, also served in An Garda Síochána and retired in 1987.
