The Court of Appeal will give its decision this week on an appeal by former soldier, Lisa Smith against her 15-month sentence for membership of the terrorist organisation ISIS.
Lawyers for Smith, who was convicted last year by the Special Criminal Court, told the appeal court she was at the lowest level of the terrorist organisation and her sentence was excessive.
However, prosecution lawyers said Smith had chosen to travel knowing of ISIS atrocities and had rejected every call to return.
They said the sentence was appropriate and had taken mitigating factors into account.
Lisa Smith, 40, from Dundalk in Co Louth, was the first person to be convicted in an Irish court of an Islamic terrorist offence committed abroad.
In its ruling, the Special Criminal Court found that she joined ISIS when she travelled to Syria in 2015.
The court found she was at low risk for reoffending but that she had been persistent and determined in her efforts to travel to Syria and join ISIS and had shown no remorse for her actions.
Mr Justice Tony Hunt imposed the 15-month sentence, saying a custodial sentence was necessary to mark the seriousness of the offence and to deter others from offering support to dangerous organisations.
The appeal court will give its decision on Wednesday.
