Police investigating the attempted murder of a senior detective in Omagh, Co Tyrone last week have released CCTV of the car used by his would-be killers.

At a news conference today, Detective Chief Superintendent Eamonn Corrigan said the car had been purchased in Ballyclare, Co Antrim on 8 February.

He said he wanted to know where it had been stored in the intervening period.

Police said the car - a blue Ford Fiesta - travelled down the M1 to the Omagh area the night before using false number plates.

Two gunmen were involved in the shooting of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell last Wednesday night.

He remains critically ill in hospital.

Ten shots were fired, two of which hit other vehicles.

Six men aged between 22 and 71, arrested as part of the investigation, remain in custody.

Police said the case is being treated as terrorist-related and the "primary line of enquiry is it has been carried out by the New IRA".

A reward of £20,000 (€23,000) has been offered by Crimestoppers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mr Caldwell's attackers.
