The latest extension to the Royal Canal Greenway has started with the aim of providing a "high quality footpath and cycle track" from the North Strand to Phibsborough in Dublin city at a cost of €30.85m.
Phase three of the project, which stretches 2.1 km from Newcomen Bridge to Cross Guns Bridge, is funded by the National Transport Authority's Active Travel Programme.
It will also include accessible ramps from the canal towpath to all road crossings, a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the canal and a new community plaza, as well as tree planting and landscaping.
The work is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025.
Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD said: "Greenways are for locals, to help ensure that people living in an area – in this case an historic and relatively densely populated part of the city – can get to where they want to go to or can just enjoy the route without having to negotiate traffic clogged roads."
Waterways Ireland Dublin Development Manager Máirín Ó Cuireáin, said: "When complete phase three will link Spencer Dock in Dublin 1 with Maynooth in Co Kildare where the Royal Canal Greenway goes all the way to the Shannon."
