Íarnród Éireann has said it is currently exploring the possibility of installing vending machines onboard its services.

However, it says that discussions are at an early stage.

In a statement, the company said that modifications would need to be made onboard to facilitate such a move - both mechanically and electrically - and they are also examining this.

Íarnród Éireann also said it is due to announce a partial return of a trolley service on some services soon.

Negotiations with the preferred supplier are expected to conclude shortly.

The company began tendering for a new catering supplier last May, after its then-provider advised it could not continue due to staffing issues and rising costs.

At the time, it had said that onboard catering services would not resume until "at least early 2023".
