There are more than 700 people in hospital with Covid-19 today.

It comes amid concern that socialising over the Christmas period would lead to a surge in cases.

The Health Service Executive reported that as of 8am this morning, there were 703 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in hospitals around the country.

This is an increase of 47 on yesterday's figure of 656 inpatients with the virus.

On 23 December, there were 667 people with the virus in hospital.

Thirty-two people are currently being treated in intensive care, three more than yesterday.

In the days leading up to Christmas, Chief Medical Officer Professor Breda Smyth had appealed to people to stay at home and not meet family if they have flu-like symptoms.

Professor Smyth had expressed concern about the rise in coronavirus hospital admissions, and asked people to make a concerted effort over the next four to six weeks to reduce transmission.
