Injured UN peacekeeper returns to Ireland for medical treatment

The Defence Forces has confirmed that injured Irish UN peacekeeper Shane Kearney has landed at Casement Aerodrome on a special medical aircraft.

It said Trooper Kearney landed safely in Baldonnel at 5.40pm.

He is now being transferred by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital to continue receiving medical treatment.

The 23-year-old sustained blunt force trauma to the head when the armoured UN vehicle he was travelling in was attacked in the coastal Lebanese village of Al-Aqbiya last week.

Trooper Kearney was flown from Beirut Airport to Dublin on a "specially equipped, contracted medical aircraft", according to the Defence Forces.

For the past week, he has been a patient in a hospital in Sidon and described as critical.

In a statement, the Defence Forces said that Trooper Kearney "is continuing to improve and he remains stable at present".

On Monday, the body of Trooper Kearney's colleague, Private Seán Rooney, was repatriated to Ireland.

Private Rooney, 24, was shot and killed in last week's attack in the coastal village in southern Lebanon.
