The communications regulator, ComReg, has announced the results of a 5G awards process.
The winning bidders for four spectrum bands are Eir, Imagine, Three and Vodafone in a deal that could raise around €448 million for the State, subject to the determination of legal proceedings.
ComReg says the spectrum bands are suitable for providing 5G and widespread mobile coverage, along with increasing the capacity of mobile and fixed networks.
The award of spectrum rights, which would last for around 19 years, increases the spectrum available for fixed and mobile services by 46%.
The regulator described it as good news for both competition and consumers, adding that the awarding of the spectrum rights will facilitate operators in making long-term investment decisions essential for the widespread rollout of 5G services in Ireland.
ComReg said this complements the Government's Digital Connectivity Strategy, published earlier this month, which set a target of 2030 for all populated areas to be covered by 5G no later than 2030.
Specific frequency assignments will now be determined for each band that has been awarded.
