New Irish Ambassador to Britain Martin Fraser described his 15-minute meeting with King Charles as "warm" as he officially took up his appointment.

Mr Fraser became the 19th ambassador to the Court of St James when he presented his credentials to the king today.

The ambassador, accompanied by his wife Deirdre, was taken to Buckingham Palace in a royal Landau horse-drawn carriage.

Mr Fraser told a reception in the Irish Embassy that King Charles has spoken of his love for Ireland and desire to continue with his visits.

He said the pair had agreed to help maintain peace in Ireland and work on the basis that "whatever we do today has to make tomorrow better".
