Skeletal remains found on a farm in Co Kilkenny may date back to the Bronze Age, according to gardaí.

A farmer was clearing land in the Lingaun Valley area near Piltown earlier this week and discovered what appeared to be human remains when removing topsoil.

Gardaí in Thomastown were notified and investigations established that the remains were "historical" and that there was nothing suspicious or unusual about the find.

The site involved is likely to have been a burial chamber during the Bronze Age, a spokesman said, but further enquiries are due to be made by experts such as the National Monuments Service.

The local coroner has been informed.

That area close to Piltown is known for containing burial tombs which could be thousands of years old.

It's thought the remains found are those of one person.
