The Irish Government is working with Kyiv authorities and the family of Rory Mason to bring home the remains of the Irishman who was killed in action in Ukraine.

The 23-year-old native of Dunboyne was killed last week while serving in the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.

Meanwhile, the Government is also involved in helping to bring home Co Meath man Brian Meagher, who was injured in the war, through the Medevac programme.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said the embassy is "very active and busy" and is working on a number of consular cases. But he did not say how many Irish people are in Ukraine fighting in the war.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, the minister reiterated that the Government's message is that Irish citizens should not travel to Ukraine to fight in the war there.

"We're strongly advising against anybody traveling to Ukraine. This is a country at war. It's a country that we're helping in every way we can in terms of helping Ukrainians to protect themselves in the face of Russian aggression. But our strong advice is that people should not be travelling to Ukraine."

The minister said that it is his responsibility to give a clear message to Irish people that "Ukraine is not a place where people should be travelling.

"We are providing a lot of help to Ukraine through various different means, but I strongly advise against Irish people traveling to fight in the war."
