A 46-year-old man will go on trial later this week charged with the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Castlerea in Co Roscommon in June 2020.

Stephen Silver, a motorcycle mechanic from Foxford, Co Mayo, pleaded not guilty to the murder of a garda acting in the course of his duty, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter by virtue of diminished responsibility when the charge was put to him at the Central Criminal Court this afternoon.

A jury is being sworn in to try the case which is expected to start on Friday and last up to seven weeks.

More than 100 witnesses could be called to give evidence.
