94-year-old man dies after boat sinks off Antrim coast

A 94-year-old man has died after the boat he was in capsized in waters off Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, yesterday.

The man has been named as Jim Allen from Belfast.

Mr Allen and his friend, a man aged in his 70s, were on board the boat, which was launched from the yacht club off the Sydenham Road between 1.30pm and 2pm.

Weather conditions at the time were reportedly good. However, a mayday call was reported after the boat began taking on water sometime around 3pm.

The boat capsized 1.5 miles offshore, near Greenisland. The PSNI has said it was treating it as a tragic drowning incident.

The other man in the boat survived and was treated by emergency services at the scene.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch is carrying out an investigation.

In a statement, PSNI Detective Inspective Stephanie Finlay said: "Our inquiries into what caused this boat to sink are at an early stage and the Maritime Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is assisting.

"We would also appreciate the public's assistance.

"If you noticed the boat, described as white and measuring 18ft, leaving the yacht club in east Belfast or saw the boat while out in the lough to please contact us on 101."

Mr Allen was a member of the East Belfast Yacht Club, which was founded by former shipyard workers.

'Sadly missed'

Treasurer Brian Larmour said Mr Allen had been involved with the club for decades and was well respected.

He had recently bought the boat and was moving it to a new mooring on the other side of the lough at Carrickfergus when the accident happened.

The club said Mr Allen would be "sadly missed" and praised the emergency services for rescuing his friend.

DUP councillor John McDermott watched the recovery operation unfold at Carrickfergus Marina yesterday.

He said: "The weather conditions to me, as a layman, looked perfect. So whatever has gone on out in the lough it must have happened very quickly.

"And I believe that a flare went up and that alerted the emergency services to what was going on."
