Man appears in court over theft of car with baby inside

A 45-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged in connection with the theft of a car in Cabra in Dublin, on Sunday night which had an infant inside at the time of the incident.

Francis Broughan, of Shangan Gardens, Ballymun, appeared before the Dublin District Court on three charges; the unauthorised taking of a vehicle under the Traffic Act, attempted hijacking under Section 10 of the Criminal Law Act, 1976, and endangerment under the Non-Fatal Offences Act.

Detective Garda Louise Moran of Mountjoy Garda Station said that Mr Broughan was arrested yesterday at 9.35pm and he was charged at 9.45pm.

The court heard that the accused made no reply when charged after caution.

Judge Patricia Cronin granted Mr Broughan free legal aid and recommended that he be given access to medical treatment, following a request by his solicitor Peter Connolly.

Mr Connolly said there would be no application for bail at this time.

Mr Broughan was remanded in custody to Cloverhill prison and is due to appear in court again via video link on 2 September.
